The Phonics Handbook

Phonics Word Book

The Jolly Phonics Word Book is a teacher´s resource.

It provides lists of words made from the letter sounds and digraphs introduced at the start of the Jolly Phonics programme. In addition, words made from the first, first two and first three groups of letter sounds are given, as are a selection of words with initial and final consonant blends. Words containing the alternative spellings of the vowel sounds are grouped together and tricky words are listed at the back of the book. The first column of words on each page is suitable for dictation.

The Phonics Videos 1&2

Inky Mouse shows her friends Snake and Bee how to read and write with the help of `Phonic´ an old computer. The videos introduce each letter by its sound (so  i  is introduced as in Inky, and later  ie  is introduced as in tie). They show the formation of each letter, how to blend sounds and how to spell using the sounds in words. The two 60 minute videos have 4 parts each and are hugely popular with children.

Using Phonics : Video Guide

A practical demonstration of how systematic phonics, particularly Jolly Phonics, is used in the UK and Canadian schools. There is an emphasis on understanding the principles and explaining how they can be used in teaching. An appendix at the end shows aspects such as special needs and research findings in more depth. The videos covers the 5 skills of Jolly Phonics :

The video is also suitable for demonstrations. Running time is 68 minutes.

Finger Phonics Books 1 - 7

Cut - out letter shapes show children´s fingers the correct formation for every letter. The delightful illustrations include the action for each sound, and objects with the sound in the word. Each of the 16 - page books covers a specific group of letters :

Finger Phonics Big Books

Designed for whole class use, the Finger Phonics Big Books have the same illustrations and vocabulary as the small books. The set of seven books comes with a wipe clean plastic sheet which is handy for letter formation practice and completing exercises.

Phonics Workbooks (Ages 4+)

Easy to use, 24 - page workbooks for children to put their skills into practice. The first books have simple letter recognition, while later books introduce joined - up (cursive) writing and the alternative spellings of the vowels. Strategies for tricky spellings and challenging puzzles for developing phonic skills are also provided.

Phonics Letter Sound Poster

A single sheet poster (840mm x 594mm) of all the 42 letter sounds. Each letter sound has an illustration that prompts the Jolly Phonics `action´ and hence the sound. Also useful for revision in older classes.

Phonics Wall Frieze

The Jolly Phonics Wall Frieze shows the 42 main letter sounds of English, not just the alphabet. The 7 sections can be put together or one by one. The pictures can also be cut up and used separately. Total length 9.33 mtr.

Phonics Alternative Spelling and Alphabet Posters

These two posters are both single sheet (840 x 594mm).

The Alternative Spelling Poster shows the alternative spellings of nine of the vowels. For  ai, for instance, it also shows  ay as in day, and a - e as in snake.

The Alphabet Poster shows just the alphabet letters, and in the four dictionary quaters to help with looking up words.

Phonics Tricky Word Wall Flowers

You can make a wall display with this Tricky Word Hat and Flowers !

There are 72 flowers (each 135mm) to put up on the wall as they are taught. The same list of 72 Tricky Words is in The Grammar Handbook 1. Ideal for teaching and reinforcing the learning of these basic words.

Phonics Cards

A pack of four boxes suitable for whole class use :

The first box contains a card for each of the 42 letter sounds and a card for each of the alternative spellings of the vowel sounds, eg. igh

The second box contains 88 regular blending words.

The third box has 80 blending words with alternative spellings of the vowels. A grey dot underneath each sound reminds the children that two letters can make one sound.

The fourth box covers the tricky words 1 - 72.

Jiglets

Jiglets are flexible, magnetic jigsaw puzzles.  The letter pieces in each Jiglet are the same shape.  As they can fit together in any order the spelling can be incorrect.  Children need to work out the correct spelling from the sounds in the words.

The Jiglets are ideal for metal chalkboards.  Each pack also has two playing boards.

The Jiglets come in two packs of four, an animal set and a vehicle set.

Stencilets

The Set of 8 Stencilets let young children draw a picture, write a word, and take pride in what they have made.  Made of durable, washable plastic, they can be folded and clipped shut to hold the paper in place.  Once children have been shown how to clip them they can be left with a pile of Stencilets, paper and pencils.

Letter Sound Strips

The Jolly Phonics Letter Sound Strips are handy strips for each child in a class.  They show the letter sounds (with the alternative spelling of the vowels on the reverse).  They are a referance for the child when trying to remember the spelling of a sound for writing.

There are 30 strips, all the same,  in each pack.

Jolly Phonics Puppets

The Jolly Phonics Puppets are plus, soft, full-size, hand puppets of the main characters in Jolly Phonics, to bring life to the teaching.

The Puppets reveal the personalities of each animal :

Inky Mouse, who teaches her friends how to read and write.

Snake, who is quick to learn and always hungry.

Bee, who finds reading very hard but keeps on trying.

Jolly Jingles (By Arlene Grierson)

The Jolly Jingles are an enjoyable and interactive way to reinforce the letter sounds.  In BIG BOOK format, and in the Jolly Phonics order, each page has a Jingle to sing, along with the appropriate letter sound(s) and action.  The tune to which each Jingle should be sung is given on the page.

This fully illustrated, 40 page, book is accompanied by a CD sung by children in Canada, with the Jingles as numbered tracks.  Alternatively, the Jingles can be read by students to the class to develop their reading skills.

Read and See Books (By Sara Wernham and Sue Lloyd)

The Read and See Books are for children who have learned the letter sounds and are now ready to read unknown words.  They have words that are all regular, and so can be worked out by sounding out and blending.

They work in a similar way to Flashcards.

Each of the 24 books has pages with a single, regular word, and a picture of the word next to it, under a flap.  Children try to read each word by blending the sounds.  They can then lift the flap to see if they are correct.  They are ideal first books to send home for reading to a parent.

Each book has 8 words.  The words towards the end of each book tend to be longer.

There are two packs : A more basic Pack 1, and a Pack 2 in which all the words have digraphs.

Jolly Readers

The Jolly Readers are interesting storybooks designed for children who are just ready to read.  They will have learned all the letter sounds in Jolly Phonics, and be able to blend these sounds to read simple words.

Available now is the first (red) level of Jolly Readers.  They use words with the basic letter sounds in Jolly Phonics, and not the alternative spelling of the digraphs. These alternative spellings will be introduced at a later level.

The Jolly Readers use controlled vocabulary so children can read words from their knowledge of the letter sounds in Jolly Phonics.  Only a few essential tricky words are used, and these are shown at the back of each book.

The Jolly Readers have engaging and lively stories which children enjoy.  The problem of heavily controoled vocabulary is overcome by the much wider use of words available with digraphs, such as splash, paint, look and trail.

The three series each have 6 storybooks, with 8 pages per book.

Jolly Grammar Handbook 1

A comprehensive teaching programme for the year after Jolly Phonics.

The Grammar Handbook 1 covers grammar, spelling and punctuation, with a programme of two days per week over the year.  Designed to improve children´s writing and spelling, it has a similar format to The Phonics Handbook, including various `actions´ and indeed revisits some of Jolly Phonics. The children on the front cover of the book are doing the `action´ for the past tense.

A comprehensive follow-on for the year after The Grammar Handbook 1. The Grammar Handbook 2 introduces new elements of grammar, teaches new spelling patterns systematically, develops dictionary and thesaurus skills, and improves vocabulary and comprehension.

It has a similar format to The Grammar Handbook 1, including two lessons plans per week over the year.

The children on the front cover of the book are doing the ``action´´ for conjunctions.

Letter Sound Games  (Ages 5+)

These games are for slightly older children who have some reading ability but need to improve their phonic skills.  As a result the games do not follow the Jolly Phonics format.  Each game has a delightful storybook and a game that uses words and scenes from the book.  Success depends on matching sounds while the element of chance allows children of different ages to play together.
